Notes from the Field: Solar Cookers International’s training in Honduras (2008)

Provides a practical example of demonstrating alternative fuels.  Includes guidelines and considerations that should be addressed before broader implementation of such programs.

Critical Review of the Use of Solar Cookers

High quality solar cooking and heating technologies are available, some nearly equaling the power output of gas or electricity. If the most important parameters such as suitability to cooking traditions, economic limitations, educational prerequisites, production and promotional requirements, or after sales repair and maintenance services are considered, solar cookers can successfully be spread. Why is it so difficult, then, to commercialize the product, when the running costs are nil and the multiple benefits are so obvious? This paper seeks to address these questions, including investigated options for using solar cookers in refugee settings.

Evaluation of Tchad Solaire’s solar cooker program in Iridimi camp, Chad (2007)

Over 15,000 solar cookers, called CooKits, were distributed in Iridimi camp, Chad over two years.  This evaluation consists of data combining121 interviews on 10 key questions, which evaluates the main users, frequency and ease of use, and overall impact on security and firewood demand.
