Building Back a Better Haiti: The Need for Cooking Fuel

Synopsis: This Women’s Refugee Commission op-ed provides an overview of the joint assessment of post-earthquake cooking fuel needs in Haiti, conducted by the Women’s Refugee Commission and the World Food Programme (WFP), with an eye towards ‘building back’ a better household energy strategy. Recommendations for a three-phase cooking fuel strategy for three distinct types of affected populations are provided.

Synopsis: This report describes a fact-finding mission to assess the current situation regarding stove use in Haiti, as well as opportunities for intervention. Recommendations on a number of deliverables are provided, including feedback and observations on a variety of stoves, both traditional and improved, including the StoveTec stove and Berkeley-Darfur Stove. The report further evaluates supply chain and manufacturing capabilities in Haiti, as well as potential partner organizations for collaboration.

Synopsis: In February 2010, the Women’s Refugee Commission and WFP undertook the first rapid needs assessment on Safe Access to Firewood and alternative Energy in Humanitarian Settings (SAFE) in Haiti. This document describes the food/fuel situation in Haiti post-earthquake, and the related protection, livelihoods, environmental and camp management concerns. The document concludes with recommendations for a coordinated, multi-sectoral fuel strategy to address the immediate, medium and long-term energy needs in Haiti.
